Hey! Look up there! Not on your ceiling, silly. On the bar at the top of my site! I’ve started a swanky mailing list. You should sign up for it. Here is my blurb on what it’s about.
For a long time, I was a big mopey mess.
I had gone to college, gotten a degree in English (and had told everyone that once I left, I would be writing with it, not teaching, thank you very much) and moved a few states north. Virginia to Pennsylvania. This was supposed to be a new adventure.
Instead, I had a job. With debt. And car payments.
For a while, it felt like everything was absolutely going to come crashing down on top of me. “This isn’t who I am,” I found a tiny, frightened voice in my head saying. I’ve heard it a few times when I’ve had my head between my knees in an office bathroom, trying to slow down my breathing and my panicking heart. “I’m not supposed to be here. It’s not supposed to be like this.”
I’m not alone.
A brief look across the Internet will show you so many faces of people who had more creative endeavors before real life took a baseball bat to their knees. And it isn’t a problem that’s exclusive to the young or the old — this failboat is loaded with people from all kinds of walks of life.
I am here to tell you that you don’t have to be defined by the money that keeps a roof over your head, food in your mouth and a few extra sketchbooks and pencils in your bag. I’m right here in the trenches with you. We’re going to get through this together. In this weekly newsletter, I will give you activities and ideas of how to keep your soul fiery when you walk in the door from the office soaking wet. We’re going to talk to people who have gotten to the other side of the river. And we’re going to thrive together.
